So I took part in Inktober2019 this year and it was an experience!
You can find all of my drawings on my Deviant art page in this folder or on my Instagram. So if you want to see what I did you can find it there.
So let’s talk about the experience here shall we?
How did I do?
Well I didn’t do too badly actually. In previous years I’d made the mistake of actually trying to draw one per day as the prompts came out and it was a nightmare! I never finished the month and I normally didn’t get more than a few days in. Previous years entries include: Poison; Underwater; Divided; Run; as well as Shadow and Snake which I did in pencil hoping I could keep up that way (I didn’t).
So as you can see I didn’t have a great track record of keeping up with things.
And then I found out that if you follow them (I think it was the newsletter) you get sent the prompt list a month in advance! Suddenly a lot of the stuff I was seeing people draw ‘in one day’ made sense. It wasn’t drawn in one day, it was drawn a month in advance (sometimes, maybe some people are just that good).
I joined the list for 2019 and got the prompts early. I prepared what I wanted to draw, having time to think about themes, subject matter and even angles sometimes (with the added difficulty of trying the theme them on my stories not just draw something, anything, that would fit the prompt.
There was a marked difference! I finished inktober! I drew a picture for every single day!
How did I feel?
I felt great about finishing it and pretty happy overall with the results… but somehow I also feel it’s a bit weird to be doing Inktober, something supposedly in October, way in advance. But at the same time there’s no way I could have drawn one per day during October itself… Mixed feelings overall of the experience but happy with the art.
Would I do it again?
I don’t know to be honest. I’ll have to see how things go. I’m not currently on the mailing list and I have other projects that are way more important to me and it was still very time conduming (even with the advanced warning) so I’m not sure I want to divert time and effort to it.
[Edit: It’s currently November 2021 as I write this add on edit and I still haven’t done another Inktober, I’d actually forgotten it was a thing over the last two years what with Covid and everything. Maybe another year. Do you think I should give it another try?]
Inktober is over… but we’re still going!
Inktober might be over but I’m still drawing (thought not as such a pace!). So if you like my art and want to see more then you’ll find plenty of my art on my social media (linked below).
But now I have to go and tidy away all my ink supplies before my cats decide to walk through it and trail little paw prints throughout the house!
Bye for now!
